Practical Activities   

The following Literary Competences activities were created for use with www.boekenzoeker.org but they can easily be adapted for use with websites in the EDM Reporter Website Collection from your country:

Activity 1: Reading Comprehension

Activity 2: Discovering stylistic characteristics (Literary competencies; talking about books)

Activity 3: Evoking expectations (Titles and bookcovers)

Activity 4: Creative writing (Possible endings)

Activity 5: Communicating about literature (Convince a friend!)

Activity 6: Communicating and reading preferences (Negociating about meanings)

Activity 7: Talking about literature (Young reviewers)

Activity 8: Discovering text sorts and genres

Activity 9: Organisation of the class library

Activity 10: A Book Project: Children choose a subject or a feeling from the website

Activity 1: Reading Comprehension   

*  Read the user's guide and follow the instructions

*  Log in! Which titles did you fill in?

*  Find 3 titles of books about feelings, about the past... (look for 'feelings' or 'subjects')

*  Click the magnifying glass and find a book with the word 'different' in the title. Try more keywords

*  Click the inkpot logo. Send your message

*  Click the bird logo. Send your tip to a friend

*  Give your vote to one of the books you read

*  Click the star logo and note the book you want to read

Activity 2: Discovering stylistic characteristics (Literary competencies; talking about books)   

*  Click the book logo

*  Click two different books. Read two extracts.

*  In pairs discuss the different styles

Activity 3: Evoking expectations (Titles and bookcovers)   

*  Note a few titles from the website

*  Read the extracts and comments

*  Invent a new title for the books

*  Comment your choice

*  Try to express what the titles make you think of.

*  Compare own expectations with the real content

*  Look at the covers. What do you expect? Compare with descriptions.

Activity 4: Creative writing (Possible endings)   

*  Read a description (summary) of a book on the website

*  Invent a possible ending of that book

*  Compare your own fantasy with the real ending

Activity 5: Communicating about literature (Convince a friend!)   

*  Convince a friend to read a book found on the website.

*  Discuss ways to convince: language, sentence patterns, compare with commercials, active language reflection!

*  The friend replies, saying how he/she was convinced by the message

*  Oral version of preceding activity

Activity 6: Communicating and reading preferences (Negociating about meanings)   

*  In pairs children read the same book, found on the website

*  They discuss how they 'received' it (hidden meanings, ideas, action, plot, characters)

*  They try to reach a common understanding,respecting different opinions

*  They give their own vote on the site

Activity 7: Talking about literature (Young reviewers)   

*  Children compare comments on a book on a children's website with adult reviews.

*  Children write their own bookreview

*  Children choose books on the website and nominate their own possible winners for a literary prize; they write their own jury report, trying to convince their colleagues; they give their votes on the website

Activity 8: Discovering text sorts and genres   

*  Children search the website and make a booklist

*  They try to list the books per genre (realistic; fantasy; historical; detective...) and text sorts (poem; story; letter; picture book; diary...)

Activity 9: Organisation of the class library   

*  The children organise their class library in a similar way as the website

*  They use the website logo's for classification (e.g; feelings; subjects)

*  They add new categories

*         They add new categories

Activity 10: A Book Project: Children choose a subject or a feeling from the website   

*  They collect the books from the website

*  Sub-themes can be added to the main theme

*  All school subjects can be involved

*  Visiting author
