Established in 1860, 'Helsinki City Library - Central Library for Public Libraries in Finland' is the largest public library in Finland with 36 branches. In addition to the routine library work it also provides information services, exhibitions and various types of programmes, organises book exhibitions on topical issues, and cooperates with day-care centres, schools, residents' associations, and city office departments. The Library co-operates closely with the other Scandinavian countries in the relevant field. The Children departments of the Library promote reading and knowledge about quality children's books and new media; the Library provides support and training for those involved with children, children's literature and new media. It has experience in multicultural international work, in organising conferences and seminars, and in networking. The Library has been awarded Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Access to Learning Award for its outstanding work in creating opportunities to promote of the potential of information technology and the Internet.
